iphone6s

January with the iphone

Just recently my Mobile/Handy contract came up for renewel, and I was left with a difficult decision to make. Over the last 2 years I have been shooting a lot with my iPhone 6s (I would say about half of my personal work is done with the phone, client stuff gets a full frame dslr!) so the dilemma that I was facing was do I stay with my particularly expensive contract (that is also 10 years old!) and get the latest all singing iPhone with it, or do I upgrade my contract to 2018 and stay with my older 6s?

Decisions, decisions!

I made my call after processing this months photos that had been shot with Lightroom Mobile (i.e. they are shot as DNG RAW images, basically digital negatives for those old enough to remember what a negative is!) Apart from not doing too well in the low light, which I might add ANY mobile/Handy will have the same issues due to the size of the sensor being smaller than you can probably see, I believe that a new device will have no difference to my images. Cheaper contract here I come, oh and I can spend some of the saved money on a new battery for it!

Remember that it is NOT the camera that you shoot with it is who is behind the camera that makes the shot, and the best camera that you have is the one the one that you have with you!

Have fun and do more!

Project 365: part II

Since some point way back in August, I have been working on a project 365. This entails taking a photo a day, every day, for a year. Well I am now at halfway! I still cant believe it that I have less than six months to go. It may sound easy but when you throw everything into a normal day that you have, work, family, sports, day to day chores, it all adds up. And sometimes you sit down of an evening and.......Damn! I forgot which is why you get photos like number 5 in this sequence! (taken late at night just after going to bed and then remembering that I needed a photo from the day!)

I have found it very useful, not only in the way that I approach my photography, but also as a diary of what I did that day.

The Project 365 has been running exclusively on Instagram until now and will continue to but I will also post regular updates here to (every couple of weeks) so that you can see how it is going.

Anyway thanks for following along.

Lightroom mobile manual controls for the iPhone

Last week saw the next iteration of the very powerful Lightroom mobile app from Adobe. There were a few visual and organizational changes to the interface which actually make things a bit easier to use especially on an iPhone.  The biggest change though is the introduction of the new 'pro' mode on the camera. Now not only can you shoot in RAW dng files but also you can adjust your own settings. The available options include ISO, exposure, white balance (which is a bit pointless since you can shoot in RAW and therefore change that in post production, but it's still nice to have!) and exposure compensation. Unfortunately you cannot change aperture as the iPhone has a fixed f/2.2 (6s) f/1.8 (7 & 7plus wide) and f/2.8 (7plus telephoto).

I have included some shots for you to look at that I have taken using the app over the last few days.

I wouldn't say that this now makes taking photos any easier with Lightroom Mobile but it now allows for you to be more creative in how you take your iPhone photos and achieving the 'feel' that you want to the image. Manual settings are difficult to work out at first but once you start to understand the relationship in the 'exposure triangle' of the 3 main settings then it becomes a lot easier.

A cool little feature that has also been added is the grid lines for composition which can be added either as a standard thirds or as the golden ratio. More about that though in another post.

This now adds features to the iPhone making it easier to have a better camera with you all the time. It will of course not replace the large DSLR cameras as the sensor size is completely different and you will get much better low light capability with a bigger sensor. As I am a fan of shooting with natural light over flash this means that I will be using my big old Canon for a while yet, but it does mean that I can do more with my most important camera, the one I have with me all the time.

Please feel free to share any iPhone/Android photos that you havein the comments below

Shooting RAW dng files with the iPhone 6s and Adobe Lightroom Mobile

As of the 13 September with the new version of the iOS operating system, the iPhone now can shoot RAW dng files. For those who don't know what that is, it is the digital version of a negative.

The image retains all of the information from the brightest points down to the darkest shadows. With RAW you can bring the details out from these areas.

As mobile phones are used for a large majority of photography these days, it is a huge step forward (and yes android users have had this for some time!)

i went for a run this morning and took some test shots with my iPhone and did the post production on the phone with Lightroom mobile. There maybe some noise and grain in the images but remember that these are taken with an iPhone!
